该剧根据2007年出版的同名小说改编，由来自《X档案》的一名编剧负责创作。故事描述一个秘密社团找到了永生的秘密——他们可以将自己的灵魂跳到别人的躯体里，利用别人的躯体充当「庇护所」。John Simms扮演洛杉矶警察Jack Whalen，为了逃避一段充满暴力的黑暗过去辞掉工作当了一名作家。他认为自己从此可以和妻子Amy（Mira Sorvino）过平静的生活，然而Amy突然离奇失踪，Jack在调查真相的过程中不得不再次面对过去的罪孽。由于Amy体内存在两个灵魂，因此Mira Sorvino相当于要同时扮演两个角色
James Frain扮演谋杀犯Richards Shepherd，但他声称自己是一名联邦探员，正在执行一项长达20年时间的绝密任务。Tory Kittles扮演长相英俊的律师Gary Fischer，是Jack Whalen的老朋友。Gary请求Jack偷偷帮他调查一起神秘的双重谋杀案。
